Frank Williams, founder of Williams F1 team, dies aged 79
The Williams F1 team, founded in 1977, dominated much of the 1980s and 1990s under his guidance, and had a total of 117 race victories.
The team that bears his name has grown into one of the most successful teams in the sport, winning seven driver titles and nine assistor championships.
“After being hospitalized on Friday, Sir Frank passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family.
“Today, we express our gratitude to a woman who was loved and inspired so much. Frank will be greatly missed. We ask all our friends and colleagues to respect the wishes of the family. Williams family about privacy at this time.”
Williams suffered a spinal cord injury in a 1986 car accident that left him unable to walk.
He stepped down from Williams’ board in 2012 and handed the day-to-day running of the team to his daughter Claire in 2013.
Williams and his family have sold the team to investment firm Dorilton Capital in the past 12 months.
Current Williams F1 drivers George Russell and Nicholas Latifi paid tribute to Williams on Twitter.
“It’s been a real honor for him and a small part of the incredible legacy he left behind, a legacy that will forever live on in the hearts and souls of this team. Rest in peace. rest, Mr. Frank. Thank you for everything.”

Current Williams CEO and team principal Jost Capito paid tribute to the team’s founder.
“Sir Frank is a legend and icon of our sport. His passing marks the end of an era for our team and for the sport of Formula 1. He is one of the finest. A true pioneer. Despite considerable adversities in his life, he led our team to 16 world championships, making us one of the most successful teams in our history. this sport.
“His values, which include integrity, teamwork, independence and fierce determination, remain a core trait of our team and are his legacy, as is the Williams surname. We are proud to race. Our thoughts are with the Williams family at this difficult time.”
F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali also paid his respects.
“He was a true giant of our sport, he overcame life’s toughest challenges and fought every day to win on and off the track. We were lose a much loved and respected member of the F1 family and he will be deeply missed,” said Domenicali.
“His incredible achievements and personality will be etched into our sport forever. My thoughts are with all of Williams’ family and friends at this sad time.”
