Custom scene has evolved in countless ways since we first launched Bike EXIF, but we’re still big fans of classic themed motorcycles. This essence cafe racer from Rusty Wrench Motorcycles ticks all the right boxes, with clean lines, subtle upgrades and flawless white paint. Notable, when you consider that it started out as a 1987 Moto Guzzi Mille GT.

And that’s the gentle way, by the way. Guzzi rolled into Rusty Wrench’s workshop in proper barn condition; Its frame was bent, half of its seat missing, and buried in dust. So the Portuguese crew really worked a miracle to get it to look this tight.

For starters, some key parts have been damaged so badly that they have to be completely removed – most notably the frame. Rusty Wrench grafted the engine onto an older Le Mans Mark III frame, then modified the subframe to suit their concept.

Next, the team rebuilt the old engine of Moto Guzzi. It now looks like new from the factory with an interesting combination of black and polished finishes. Original Dell’Orto carbs run with the DNA filter and the exhaust system is from the Italian specialists Zard.

This Mille GT still carries its original wheels – shining in a powder-coated yellow and wrapped in modern Avon rubber. But its suspension is completely new, with an upside-down Suzuki GSX-R fork at the front and YSS shock absorbers at the rear. The forks are held in place by custom spokes and there is a black diamond-like coating on the forks.

The original fork mount has been replaced to hold the custom-built fender and strut. A pair of Tokico brake calipers lifted from the Yamaha R1 gives the old Guzzi significantly more stopping power than it did in the 80s.

Taller is the classic track-style crank, which is attached to an elegantly handcrafted rack system. Sitting dead in the middle behind it is a similarly handsome speed from Motogadgeteither side are Motogadget RFID-branded Moto Guzzi touch points for keyless ignition systems.

The switches, grips, turn signals and rearview mirror are also from the German electronics company, as is the Bluetooth-enabled mo.unit controller to which the entire bike is wrapped. The throttle and lever are Kustom Tech parts.

Another original part that may exist is the Mille GT’s gas tank. Rusty Wrench adapted it to the frame of Le Mans, then modified it slightly to suit the lines they were aiming for. It looks like home here, and comes equipped with a new side cover.

The bodywork is covered with a hand-formed aluminum tailgate. The taillights are mounted in a neat recess to the rear, while the number plate rests on a swingarm mounting bracket at the bottom.

Rusty Wrench designed the seat to be invisible, creating the feeling that the saddle is floating between the trunk and the rear of the car. Perforated leather and contrast stitching add another touch of glam. Other upgrades include a new rear set and a custom reinforcement plate placed between the frame bars behind the engine.

But the best attribute of this Moto Guzzi is its elegant paint job. From the piano’s black base, to the classic Guzzi eagle and copper leaf stripes, everything is perfect. A quick glance at the engine, and you’ll even notice that the stoppers are a mix of stainless steel and brass parts.

The end result was a far cry from the dusty donor rolling into the Rusty Wrench garage for the first time. So the crew named it ‘Formosa,’ after the picturesque Ria Formosa lagoon near their home base in Faro.

It’s a fitting tribute to the region — and to this reviving Italian classic.
