Former NFL campaigner Clinton Portis was sentenced to six months in federal prison and six months in solitary confinement for participating in an NFL healthcare benefit program fraud scheme.
In September, Portis pleaded guilty to fraud charges in which he obtained nearly $100,000 after filing false claims of undelivered medical equipment.
Prosecutors claim that the 15 former players collectively raked in nearly $3 million in reimbursements for medical care and medical equipment that was never actually purchased.
They say former NFL manager Robert McCune was the one who rang the bell who made the claim on behalf of the players in exchange for a cut of their refund.
“Portis knew that the statements McCune submitted on his behalf were false and fraudulent or was aware of the high probability that the statements McCune submitted on his behalf were false and fraudulent and intentionally omitted that fact.” , read the plea agreement.
