Former CIA engineer convicted in biggest ever theft of agency secrets

A former software engineer for the Central Intelligence Agency was found guilty on Wednesday by a federal jury of causing the largest theft of classified information in the agency’s history.

Former CIA agent, Joshua Schulte, was arrested following the 2017 leak by WikiLeaks of a treasure trove of secret documents details the agency’s covert methods for infiltrating the computer networks of foreign governments and terrorists.

Wednesday’s ruling comes two years after an earlier jury disagreed on eight of the 10 charges he subsequently faced.

At an earlier trial, Mr. Schulte, 33, was found guilty of contempt of court and making false statements to the FBI. He was convicted Wednesday of nine counts, including unlawfully obtaining national defense information and unlawfully transmitting such information.

Damian Williams, US attorney in Manhattan, where the trial took place, praised the ruling. Schulte was found guilty of “one of the most shameless and damaging acts of espionage in American history,” Williams said in a statement.

Mr. Williams added that those actions were due to the hatred against the CIA so strong that Mr. Schulte had to make “some of our most important intelligence tools known to the public and therefore adversaries to the CIA.” we”.

Mr. Schulte, who defended himself at the most recent trial, argued that he was being seen as a scapegoat for the CIA’s own failures.
