My favorite thing about indie games is how difference they are allowed. Considering the sheer number of games released these days, there must be a lot of games that stand out, so I’m excited to have something really eye-catching. That is the case of Forgive me, fatherA Lovecraftian FPS title has just been released by Byte Barrel.

The art style has a comic-inspired 2.5D look and feel, and both the game’s art and content are based on the works of HP Lovecraft, which is always fun if you’re into the bad gothic horror genre enter. The game does an interesting job taking from the source material, and definitely creates the tone that it plays with the environment and sound design – I have to often Pokémon interrupted because it made me feel uncomfortable.

Inspired by the classics

Let’s talk about the gameplay, because that’s the star of the show here: the guns feel really good and powerful. For FPS, this is the the most important factor in my opinion, so it’s good they’ve eliminated that squared. You get a total of eight different weapons in Forgive me, father, including your melee weapons, each of which you can upgrade throughout the game. I find the upgrades really satisfying every time I buy them and I can feel the difference in how each weapon works afterwards.

The basic gameplay of running through different environments and well, just shooting up different enemies feels very reminiscent of the early classics that defined the FPS genre like Death and Wolfenstein 3D. The way the weapons work, where you have a whole bunch of weapons to choose from, each with its own specific feel, reminds me a lot of how the guns in the series work. how. Against. You also have extra cooldown skills to do things like heal you, stun enemies, etc.

While most of the game you’re running through narrow, dimly lit corridors trying to find the key to the door (like I said, it feels a lot like previous entries in the FPS genre) , it will occasionally emit you entering a room full of enemies that you can only take down. It was the most fun I had while playing Forgive me, father.

Add a new change

Obviously there is a skill tree where you can upgrade all your guns, but you can also upgrade your other passive and active abilities. Every upgradable mechanic has some good options that make me really stop and think about what I want to pick, but it never feels like there are so many options that I’m overwhelmed by them. . One tip I’ll share with you in case you pick up the game: make sure to buy the upgrades that get you more XP on every early kill. Even when XP is fully upgraded, leveling can still be a bit slow at times.

The story has a twist, too, but it’s presented only in small chunks that have more flavor than any actual narrative. After a while, I just skipped over getting into the notes and artifacts altogether, because the game was so focused on its FPS-heavy genre that the story really hit the curb.

Forgive me, father there are twelve levels in total and after each level you will have a screen showing you how many enemies you have killed, how long is your time, how many secrets you have found etc. It’s perfect for anyone who loves arcade-style gameplay and wants to perfect their run.

There is also this “crazy” mechanic that works when you get a lot of lives, which makes you deal more damage and take less damage from enemies. Maybe it’s because I tend to be a slower, strategic player who tries to line up headers, but personally I don’t find that “crazy”. However, if you’re the type of player that runs and shoots fast, I have a feeling you’ll get more benefit.

It’s a game designed very specifically for a very specific type of player, so if you love classic FPS games with a modern RPG twist, you’ll probably love this one. . If you don’t particularly enjoy playing shooters at breakneck speed, the payoff may diminish as you get deeper into the game. Forgive me, father.

If you also like difficulty, this game is definitely for you. Take it for granted for now as I’m notoriously bad at any form of real-time combat, but I had to play through this game on the easiest difficulty. I know, I know, let’s destroy the torches and throw cups.

Do not misunderstand me, Forgive me, father still a formidable challenge for me in easy mode, especially when it comes to mini-boss rooms and boss fights. I probably added an hour and a half to my playtime so as not to constantly die at these choke points, but overall the difficulty didn’t stop me from enjoying the experience. Also keep in mind that if you play shooters even semi-regularly, you probably won’t have as much trouble as I did.

Some points to note

A few downsides – the game gets a bit repetitive for my taste after a while. Some of the level designs are pretty creative, but after a while, even the better environments feel a bit tedious, and I’m just ready to get to the end of the level.

This is also a small move, but important to me: no fast melee. If you want quick melee to finish off a near-death enemy, you have to use the mouse wheel or the number keys to select the knife, then you can melee, and then you can do it again. all to go back to your chosen gun. When the name of the game was speed and precious ammo, I was confused that there were no quick tap moves.

You also can’t change the sensitivity on motion or target, which is another issue for me. As someone with a below-average skill level, I’d like my mouse sensitivity to be a bit slower, but without that option, I just might have to endure it. Your movement speed is super fast, which can be useful when running away from enemies, but I keep getting stuck on environmental obstacles because I’m moving so fast that I can’t track the location mine. Again, this is mostly my problem, but in a game that relies so much on precise movements, I would really like the option to customize my settings.

Forgive me, father Unfortunately, is one of those games that I like more in theory than in practice. It has a solid premise, a really cool, unique art style, and a gripping RPG system, but it lacks a certain level of polish to make it a more memorable experience. I’d say if you’re a die-hard FPS fan you should absolutely give it a try, but if not, this might just be one to skip.
