The automaker announced Thursday that it will add Super Duty Manufacturing at its Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada, starting in 2026. Ford said the move would add 100,000 vehicles to its production capacity, and it also plans to add jobs and/or overtime at an engine plant in Ontario and three components plants in the United States to support the move. Ford said the two plants currently producing the Super Duty would produce 200,000 trucks in the first half of 2024.

The Oakville plant previously assembled the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus crossovers, but has expected to switch to EV production starting this year. Ford said it will allocate five electric vehicles to the plant in 2020, the last of which will be available by 2028, as part of a new agreement with the local union after the automaker decided not to continue building the Edge and Nautilus in Oakville.

Ford has promised at the time that more affordable EVs could be sold in larger numbers, but it may take a while for them to arrive.

Meanwhile, Ford has been spotted testing what appears to be a electric pickup truck with motor in wheel and eight-spoke wheels are commonly used on heavy-duty trucks like the Super Duty. But it remains to be seen whether this technology will make it to production.
