Ford Capri EV confirmed in bold teaser

The Ford Capri The name will be revived for an electric vehicle (EV), with the Blue Oval confirming the industry’s best-kept secret in a bold online teaser.

In the video posted to Ford’s social media accounts, a Mk3 Capri is parked near an EV charger when the driver gets out of the car, walks to the wall charger and begins unplugging the cable.

He returned to the car and tried to plug the charging cable into the Capri’s gas tank but it didn’t work.

The words “The Legend is Back” and 10/07/24 are written on both the ground and the rear window of the car, referring to the launch date of the reborn model.

Before you get your hopes up for an electric sports car, though, previous Ford teasers have suggested the beloved name will be attached to an SUV.

Despite its coupe-inspired body and distinct front and rear styling, the new Capri will share many similarities with the European Ford Explorer, which rides on Volkswagen’s dedicated MEB EV architecture.

The reborn Ford Capri will be built in Cologne, Germany at the same factory that produced the first three generations of the original coupe.

While some consider the return of the Capri name on an electric car an insult to its heritage, the name was revived once before after the European coupe ended production in 1986.

Ford Australia used the name on a front-wheel drive Laser convertible in 1989, but unfortunately it launched at the same time as the iconic rear-wheel drive Mazda MX-5.

Previously, the Capri name was also used by Mercury (on a version of the Ford Mustang) and Lincoln (on a full-size luxury car).
