Ford ads give women in the auto industry the credit they deserve

Introducing Ford Explorer® Men’s Only Edition | Ford

colleague women And Feminist, please put your coffee down. Don’t throw them at your laptop, phone or co-workers who may have thought to show you or send this video! If all you see are headlines and your immediate reaction is anger — that’s okay, Me too (and threatened to throw away anything Ford-related, including my Ford-attached husband…). D.deep breath. press play and enjoy a little, thoughtful empowerment this International Women’s Day, and Women’s history month, because damn, we deserve it.

Earlier this morning, Ford released the ad above for the “Ford Explorer Men’s Only Edition.” At first glance, if you don’t press play, thoughts can range from “is this real?” to roll her eyes at the appearance of stereotypical heterosexual jokes poking at girlfriends or wives. But this ad is not so. Are not. Ford put together a “men’s” Explorer that lacked a lot of creature comforts and features, then pointed out out those features are missing because Women invented them.

“Introducing the Ford Explorer exclusively for men — without windshield wipers. There is no heater. No turn signal? Wait, no rearview mirror? No GPS? Are you kidding?” the voice actor said more and more confused. “Ah, it lacks all the parts made by women. OH. Whose great idea was that?”

Well, actually… women.

Ford said in the press release that the ad was created to celebrate the “important role” women played in the auto industry,” and then included in the influencers list Women in the automotive industry and their contributions to the modern automotive industry. This fake Explorer lost its rearview mirror? Well, it’s missing because it was created by Dorothy Levitt and innovated by Dorothée Pullinger. Modern day GPS? You can thank Dr. Gladys West for that.

advertising is small but significantly nod to all the women who contributed to improve the car and the automotive industry in general. Nowadays there are many women behind the scenes or take the lead of the auto industry compared to 10, 20, even 100 years ago. And the contributions of women to cars are not small. Clearly, as the ad outlined, they have made your daily commute and road trips possible—and a lot easier.

Ironically for me, the other day I had a conversation with a colleague where we discussed how many powerful, influential and creative women we have in this industry. , from engineering and marketing to those of us (just kidding) in the media. Surely, after today, or this month, most people may forget this little history lesson, and it’s back with another battle for recognition and appreciation. IHonestly, it’s gotten so much better for women, yet we still have yards to go.

Anyway, let’s take a minute to congratulate all the women who have done some amazing things for cars. and industryand make sure we raise them up as role models for the little girls out there, in the hope that they will happily and confidently follow in our footsteps.

Happy International Women’s Day to everyone and a special thank you to all of you kick in the butt women who have written, edited, squirm, quarrel or contribute to Jalopnik in its nearly 20-year history.
