Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk together on Thursday announced that Ford is planning to switch to Tesla’s charging interface — and Tesla Superchargers’ superior fast charging experience — starting with next-generation electric vehicles by 2025.
Next-generation models will have the familiar Tesla gate, called North American Charging Standard (NACS)built-in, with the ability to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations without an adapter.
When new Ford EVs are introduced, it will completely eliminate the CCS standard in the United States. Ford customers will also not need to use the Tesla app, as Musk has confirmed. “We’re thrilled to support Ford vehicles with the Tesla Supercharger network, and provide API access so that Ford vehicles can seamlessly charge at the Tesla Supercharger using the Ford app,” he said.
“We don’t want the Tesla Supercharger network to be a walled garden… we want it to be something that supports electrification and sustainable transportation in general,” Musk added.
