Flyers GM – Red Wings closes James van Riemsdyk trade at 11 o’clock

James van Riemsdyk was directed to Detroit Red Wings on the NHL transaction deadline — until he doesn’t show up.

On a fairly quiet deadline day on Friday, one of the moves that attracted the biggest attention was one that didn’t happen. It has been reported that the Philadelphia flyer are trading van Riemsdyk, a veteran winger, for the Red Wings. But van Riemsdyk was not traded to Detroit or anywhere else before the 3 p.m. ET deadline. He’s still staying with the Flyers ahead of unlimited free agency this summer.

According to Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher, the two teams have agreed on a transaction that could send van Riemsdyk to Detroit for draft picks, with Philadelphia retaining part of his $7 million cap. But the deal relies on the Red Wings swapping a striker off their roster to make way for van Riemsdyk. When that didn’t happen, the whole deal was wrecked.

“They had the notion that if they could move beyond their team, they would be interested in acquiring JVR,” says Fletcher. “During that time, the other transaction goes through conditionally and finally the other transaction goes through.”

Van Riemsdyk is one of the biggest names still on Friday. In his 14th season, he has 297 career goals and 23 points in 41 games this season. The Flyers see him as a veteran rental player who can help a team in contention. Fletcher was surprised that there was no market for van Riemsdyk.

“One offer I got for JVR was at 1:40 this afternoon and it was a conditional offer,” he said. “I don’t know what the market might be like, but I think there will be at least some offers that we have to look at.”

Fletcher said he has spoken to every team in the NHL about the possibility of acquiring van Riemsdyk, not only so the Flyers can claim the fortune for him but also in hopes of bringing the veteran winger to a football team. playoffs. But he said “every team has told us ‘no’ several times” before the Red Wings stepped on the table.

“There’s no smoke gun here,” said Fletcher. “We’ve definitely let everyone know that he’s available. We’ve let everyone know that we’ll keep 50% [of his cap hit]. We have let everyone know that we will withdraw the contract if that helps. We talked about all the kids in different situations. I can’t just control half of myself and have to have someone willing to buy. Until 1:40 today, we’ve never had any kind of offer.”

Fletcher said the only thing he is not willing to give back to van Riemsdyk is a player whose contract expires after this season, unless it is a player who can help the Flyers. But he says the market is simply not there to trade.

“Yesterday I received two calls: One from JVR and one from another player. I earned 17 [calls]”, said Fletcher. “We’d rather have a good pick and let JVR play in the knockout stages, and the market has spoken.”
