Flight turbulence: Why did planes start shaking?
My podcast this week is about the source of aircraft turbulence.
Why are there sometimes uncomfortable and confusing movements while flying? Knowing the cause can give you peace of mind.
The map of turbulence reported by pilots last week shows a lot of reports, but keep in mind that most turbulence is usually found within a narrow range of altitudes.
As I describe in the podcast, there are several main types of perturbations:
- Mechanical turbulence and convection near the ground.
- Turbulent waves on the mountain top
- Turbulence due to wind shear
- Thunderstorms and convective disturbances
