Flight delay forced major change to MotoGP Argentina schedule
MotoGP 2022 – Round 3
Argentina – Schedule change
Logistics issues affecting freight for the FIM MotoGP World Championship have forced a change to the schedule for Argentina’s upcoming Gran Prix. Five cargo flights were scheduled to transport cushion materials from Lombok, Indonesia, to Tucuman, near Termas de Rio Hondo in Argentina, in the week following the Indonesian GP.
Due to two separate issues affecting two different flights, the final cargo for the Argentine GP will now arrive in the country on Friday. The flight includes cargo for all classes of the FIM MotoGP World Championship, so time schedule changes are required for all classes.
Free Practice sessions will begin and run for all classes on Saturday morning (Sunday our time). Of the sessions that normally take place on Fridays, only one session was cancelled, and the other was moved to Saturday. Qualifiers will take place on Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning our time), with a slightly later start time.
Sunday Morning Warm-ups have been extended, with each race starting at the same start time as originally scheduled.
The trip from Lombok to Termas includes five flights. Three of the cargo routes are scheduled to carry cargo from Lombok to Tucuman via technical stops in Mombasa, Lagos and Brazil. Two other routes plan to carry freight from Lombok to Doha, Doha to Accra in Ghana and then to Tucuman.
The series of events began last Wednesday when one of five planes crashed during a technical stop in Mombasa, Kenya. The plane that first arrived at Tucuman was then turned back to Lombok to pick up more cargo, and unfortunately the plane also experienced technical problems during a grounding last Wednesday night.
As of Thursday morning local time in Argentina, one load was still grounded in Mombasa, Kenya. The plane was waiting for one part to get back into the air, with two parts – one to be dispatched from Europe and the other, to be dispatched from the Middle East – already on its way.
The plane is expected to take off this evening and will follow the route from Mombasa via Lagos and Brazil, arriving in Tucuman on Friday.
