First test confirms Lucid Air charges faster than Model S or Taycan

Lucid Air can charge faster than Tesla Model S or Porsche Taycan, a test of InsideEVs confirmed.

During a session at a America’s electrification The DC fast charging station, Lucid Air Dream Edition went from 0% charge to 80% state in 37 minutes and took another 45 minutes to charge from 80% to 100%. That difference is typical of DC fast charging, which slows down significantly after 80% regardless of vehicle type.

InsideEVs also reported achieving Lucid’s quoted 300 kW maximum charging capacity. This allows the Air to charge its battery pack to 50 kWh – half the capacity of the Model S kit – in just 11 minutes. In previous tests, the Model S took 15 minutes to reach 50 kWh, while the Taycan took 23 minutes to do the same, Inside EVs noted.

That said, there are significant charge losses for DC fast charging, and even though the Electrify America hardware indicates 134 kW, this doesn’t indicate the Air Dream Edition has a larger battery than the 118 kWh specified. Normally, heat is lost in cables and connectors, and also in the vehicle on the way to the cells; Some of the charger’s power can also be used to keep the charger cool during such fast charging.

Lucid quoted 300 miles in 20 minutes and up to 20 miles per minute — close to the results this test suggests. The plane went up 200 miles in about 12 minutes and 300 miles in about 25 minutes. The Air has a maximum EPA range of 520 miles, but this test shows it can also add a lot of usable range in a fairly short amount of time. As long as the driver has access to a 350 kw charging station, ie.

We did not put Lucid’s charging or range claims to the test in our short time first time driving, but still see many things to like about the Air, including its amazing acceleration and spacious interior.

CEO Peter Rawlinson said that Efficiency is what drives Lucid more than scope, and the world-leading range is a welcome result of that. It looks like Lucid can now add impressive charging speeds to the Air’s praise list as well.
