Final Fantasy VII, 25 years later
On January 31, 1997, Final Fantasy VII launched in Japan. 25 years later? We’re working on a remake, the original is available on almost every platform and Cloud and Sephiroth are involved. Smash Bros. Siliconera staff is sharing its favorites FFVII memory. Why not share yours in the comments!
I think finally play Final Fantasy VII on PS1 is a big one for me. See, I played it on PC for the first time. (That’s how I played FFVIII originally!) I don’t have a controller, so I have to rely on keyboard controls. And because I don’t have own computer, I went into my parents’ office and used one of their computers. That meant I was right in the North Cave and ended the game when circumstances meant it was uninstalled to make room for a new show business. Because my first disc is too scratched to work? I wasn’t able to properly reboot and beat the game until I played it on the console afterwards. – Jenny
Final Fantasy VII not my first time Final Fantasy – that will be FFVI – but it can be the most impactful. Sure, many moments from FFVI will always be iconic. I doubt I will ever forget them! But FFVIIMy whole vibe has stuck with me since the day I paid weeks’ worth of allowance to buy an overpriced, pirated CD copy of it from a local toy store. I even had to play on a hand-me-down PS1 that had to be turned sideways to read the disc. The mix of a seemingly modern/sci-fiction aesthetic with monolithic architecture and the typical JRPG narrative scale of the time appealed to me then as young as 12.
It helps too Redo was very interesting, to boot. Instead of looking like the most problematic franchise expansions Compile FFVII? Redo actually seems to be struggling and respecting its previous incarnations. It’s an approach that most reboots really don’t need to take. That’s what I think I can keep FFVII influence a new generation of nerds. – Josh
My best memory of Final Fantasy VII related to CGI movies Advent Children. I remember downloading the Japanese announcement trailer for the movie, the resolution was so poor I could barely make out anything. And even though I haven’t played yet Final Fantasy VII Myself at the time, I became very aware of who these characters were through cultural absorption. So I’m super excited to see these characters in full 3D. I can still remember the pixel-by-pixel mess of the Nibelheim incident in that trailer. Just thinking about me crouching in front of my computer with my big, bulky CRT screen watching the trailer over and over again makes me feel deeply nostalgic. – Kazuma
