FINA World Championships: Katie Ledecky wins fourth 1,500m freestyle world title


American Katie Ledecky dominated the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle to claim her second gold medal at the swimming world championships in Budapest on Monday.

Ledecky, who won the women’s 400 m freestyle on the opening day, took the gold with a time of 15 minutes 30.15 seconds.

The 25-year-old finished 14 seconds more than compatriot Katie Grimes, who won silver while Australia’s Lani Pallister took bronze.

“I love this pool, I know I put in the effort to swim well and get up to speed,” Ledecky said.

“I have a relay, it’s the next show and then I’ll do the 800m. We’ll see (if I can get the record).”

Earlier, Romanian teenager David Popovici broke his junior’s world record when he won gold in the men’s 200 meters freestyle.

The 17-year-old became the first Romanian men’s swimmer to win gold at the world championships, finishing with a time of 1:43.21.

He finished a little over a second ahead of South Korea’s Hwang Sun-woo while England’s reigning Olympic champion, Tom Dean, finished third.
