Final Fantasy XIV may be best known as an online fantasy RPG, but it is also a multiplayer platformer for Mahjong, the globally popular jigsaw puzzle has been around for centuries. Players can visit Thanalan’s Golden Disc or Search Engine for Mahjong matches against others FFXIV players, climb the ranks to get rewards. Square Enix also hosts an annual Mahjong tournament featuring special guests and members of the development team. In the year 2022, FFXIV Mahjong tourney takes place in the new year celebration. (The Tournament 2020 held at the end of December). It will open on January 22, 2022.

The Mahjong Tournament guest list feature FFXIV Producer and director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida, NieR Yosuke Saito series producer, Yasumi Matsuno (Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII), and voice actor Shinnosuke Tachibana, who plays Alphinaud. Other members of the development team and Sque Enix staff will also participate, including Final Fantasy XVI Directed by Hiroshi Takai, Final Fantasy XI Director Nobuako Komoto, game designer Yosuke Hayashi, and FFXIV Lead level designer Shin Takahashi. FFXIV Global community producer Toshio Muro and Japan Mahjong 101 official Fumika Yamada will also be present, along with commentators and chat moderators.
The tournament will be streamed live on NicoNico from 13:00 Japan Standard Time, although it looks like the show itself will only air in Japanese. As with previous Mahjong tournaments, no plans have been announced regarding multilingual broadcasts or translated archives of the stream.
