Favorite background to repeat in Miles


A full field of 12 older horses completed the 87th run on the $150,000 Longacres Mile on Aug. Emerald Downs.

Background took 4th place at the back and was the favorite with a score of 2-1 in the morning in an attempt to be a two-time fifth-mile winner and second only at the Emerald Downs. Coached by Mike Puhich for Bob and Molly Rondeau, the 5-year-old Florida mixed-race boy has a 6-3-4 ratio in 20 careers starting with $430,488 in earnings, including a 4-1-1 record in six start at a mile.

“He had a bit of a gap between races, and he ran very fresh,” Puhich said of Background.

Magnificent Eagle , from the inventory of Hall of Fame coach Neil Drysdale, was the 4-1 second pick.
