Fastest cars around Nurburgring

Germany’s famous Nurburgring Nordschleife is one of the most technical and dangerous in the world, so it’s naturally where the world’s car brands come to develop their upcoming models. – as well as competing for the title of ‘fastest lap ‘Round’ .

In recent years, it seems that Nurburgring lap timing is just as important as the release of new models, as manufacturers vie for bragging rights around the ‘Green Hell’.

The Mercedes-AMG One toppled the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Manthey Performance Kit, with a lap time of 6:35.183 on the Nordschleife track.

That’s an 8.0-second improvement from the previous record – a significant margin.

The previous record holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Manthey Performance Kit, set a lap time of 6:43.30.

Here is the list of current Nurburgring production car record holders from the track of Official website:

  • Compact cars: Audi RS3 sedan – 7:40,748 minutes (2021, video is here)
  • Mid-range car: Jaguar XE SV Project 8 – 7:23,164 minutes (2019, video is here)
  • Operating vehicle: Mercedes-AMG GT63 S 4 Door – 7:27,800 min (2020, video is here)
  • Electric Car: Porsche Taycan Turbo S with Performance kit – 7:33,350 min (2022, video is here)
  • SUVs, off-road vehicles, trucks, pickups: Porsche Cayenne Coupe Performance Model – 7: 38,925 minutes (2021, video is here)
  • Sports cars: Porsche 911 GT2 RS with Manthey Performance Kit – 6:43.30 (2021, video is here)

There is also a ‘Prototype’ category for non-production cars such as race cars and pre-production concepts, here are three benchmark times set by three very Various prototype cars:

  • Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo (all-time record) – 5 hours 19,546 minutes (2018, video is here)
  • Volkswagen ID.R (electric record) – 6:05,336 minutes (2019, video is here)
  • Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept (FWD + four-door record) – 7:20.143 (2019, video is here)

Due to the extremely competitive nature of this lap time, the Nurburgring record-setting efforts could not be without controversy.

It’s common for manufacturers to fit cars with race seats and race-focused tires to cars trying to hit the record, leading many to question the validity of lap times, especially if the model is not available to the public with the same specifications.

Possibly one of the biggest media storms of late 2017 came when the Lamborghini Huracan Performante claimed to be the fastest production car around the ‘Ring, although opponents accused the Raging Bull of undercutting it. video on board of the record lap at the time, was 6 hours 51.01 minutes.

Last year’s car production record set by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR was also burned, as modifications on the ‘standard’ GT2 RS were made by Manthey Racing, meaning the car that holds the record is incomplete. It’s all an internal Porsche affair.

Regardless, it is certain that we will continue to see manufacturers remove those earlier seconds from this Nurburgring lap time in the years to come. With cars continually becoming faster and more aerodynamic, perhaps we could see production cars cross the six-minute barrier sooner than we think.
