A 36-year-old man was shot dead in Argentina during clashes between rival supporters of the same club ahead of a second division match, police said. Witnesses said the clash was between supporters of Club Atletico de San Martin in the northwestern city of San Miguel de Tucuman on Monday night. Fans are heading to the stadium for the group’s top clash with Belgrano, police sources told the official Telam news agency. San Martin President Ruben Moisello said the victim was shot in the neck from behind.

Police cordoned off the area after the incident but the game went on with San Martin’s 1-0 win.

A murder investigation has been opened and deputy police chief Tucuman Juan Ibanez said “the culprit has been identified.”

Also on Monday night, about 15 people were arrested and three police officers injured when angry second-division Nueva Chicago fans tried to break into the locker room after their team’s 3-2 loss to Almagro. According to the NGO Salvemos al Futbol (Let’s Save Football), violent clashes inside and outside the stadium have resulted in more than 300 deaths since Argentine football turned professional in the 1930s.
