Experimental chewing gum could be used to help reduce COVID-19 transmission

The New York Post reports that chewing gum can prevent the transmission of SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine using medical gum found that “plant-grown proteins” can “trap” infectious viruses.

Henry Daniell, lead researcher, said:

SARS-CoV-2 multiplies in the salivary glands, and we know that when someone infected sneezes, coughs or speaks some of that virus can be expelled and reach others.

He also added:

This gum offers an opportunity to neutralize the virus in saliva, giving us a simple way to cut down on the source of infection.
