Brussels officials are being trained in meditation to help them tackle the climate crisis as part of a new wave of “applied mindfulness” that seeks to bring a Buddhist-inspired practice “out” out of the buffer” and engage in hardline politics.

EU officials working in the 27-nation bloc climate policy to deal with green is attending “internal green agreement” courses aimed at fostering deeper links between decision-makers and negotiators tasked with crisis resolution. Courses include forest walks near Brussels and meditation sessions, including one that invites participants to feel empathy for trees and animals to increase “environmental compassion”.

Some managers are said to have shown impatience when asked to meditate and wanted to “get to work”. But early results from the first 80 participants show that the course has strengthened officials’ drive to tackle climate problems and overcome personal despair that very few have been able to do.

Mindfulness has exploded in popularity in the West in recent years through courses, meditation apps, and books. But it has been criticized that it has become a “religion of self”, with a reviewer’s warning of “McMinduality”. However, it is recognized by the NHS as an effective treatment for recurrent depression when considered mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.
