Elon Musk’s tweets then delete the Trudeau-Hitler comparison

Elon Musk compared Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Adolf Hitler in a tweet that appeared to support truckers protesting the vaccine ban – and this immediately caused a storm on Twitter.

Musk sent the tweet Wednesday just before midnight in California and deleted it by midday on Thursday with no explanation. He did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk, CEO of Teslain late January tweeted in support of Canadian truckers who had closed roads and bridges, drawing international attention for their opposition to the health policies set forth by the government of Canada. Trudeau pushed.

Responding to a tweet describing how Trudeau’s government has ordered banks to help cut funding for protesters, Musk posted a meme of a photo of Hitler, with the words “Stop comparing me with Justin Trudeau” at the top and “I have a budget” below it.

Musk has 74 million Twitter followers, making him one of the most prominent accounts. That is often seen as a marketing benefit for tram Tesla manufacturer.

Musk is known for his sharp humor and blunt judgments, but his comparisons of Trudeau to the Nazi leader, the man responsible for the genocide of millions of Jews and the start of World War second, has gone too far for many Twitter users.

“@elonmusk is disgustingly comparing Trudeau to Hitler. Don’t do stuff like this. You look stupid,” @ElliotMalin wrote. At midday on Thursday, the original tweet was replaced with the message “This tweet has been removed by the author of the Tweet.”

The American Jewish Committee responded to Musk’s tweet with a call for an immediate apology.

Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne spoke to Musk on Twitter, telling him his reported comments were “quite frankly shocking.”

But his tweet also has more than 35,000 likes, over 9,000 retweets and plenty of positive responses, including a line from @maroongolf17 that says “my next car now has to be #tesla.”

Claims of abuse

When Musk’s Hitler tweet went viral, he also accused the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of harassing him and Tesla with an “endless” and “non-stop” investigation into the his tweet, which he said was intended to punish Musk for being an outspoken critic of the government.

The accusations were made in a letter to US District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan, who presided over a settlement with the SEC in 2018 stemming from Musk’s tweets about a potential Tesla acquisition.

Alex Spiro, an attorney for Musk and Tesla, wrote: “Mr Musk and Tesla respectfully seek a correction of course. “Enough is enough.”

The SEC declined to comment.

Thursday’s letter escalates Musk’s battle with regulators as they scrutinize his social media posts and Tesla’s treatment of workers, including allegations discrimination.

According to Tesla’s disclosure on February 7 that it received a subpoena from the SEC for compliance with the 2018 settlement.

The SEC sued Musk in August 2018 after he tweeted that he was “funded” to potentially take his electric car company private at $420 per share. In fact, a buy wave is not close.

Tesla and Musk settled by agreeing to pay $20 million in civil penalties and have Tesla’s attorneys pre-screen some of Musk’s communications, including tweets that could affect the stock price. of Tesla. Musk also stepped down as Tesla chairman.

The latest subpoena came on November 16, ten days after Musk polled his Twitter followers on whether he should sell his 10% stake in Tesla, causing a sell-off.

Chilled speech

In Thursday’s letter, Spiro accused the SEC of ignoring its pledge to distribute $40 million in fines to shareholders, while instead “dending its substantial resources to unfounded investigations.” , endless” for Musk and Tesla.

“At worst, the SEC appears to be targeting Mr Musk and Tesla for relentless investigations largely because Mr Musk remains an outspoken critic of the government; the SEC’s overwhelming efforts seem to be overwhelming. calculate Spiro wrote.

Spiro asked Nathan to schedule a meeting to find out why the SEC “unilaterally issued subpoenas” without court approval and why the funds were not distributed.

If the SEC finds out that Musk violated the settlement, they can ask Nathan to remove it and reopen the case or prosecute new charges.

The letter was filed eight days after the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing sued Tesla over allegations by black workers that the company tolerated racial discrimination at its Fremont, California factory.

Tesla has called that lawsuit a mistake. It is also trying to reduce or award a jury award of about $137 million to a former Black elevator operator for forcing him into a hostile work environment at the Fremont factory.

Only on Thursday, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an official poll to 416,000 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y car after receiving a complaint about the unexpected brake attached to its Autopilot system.
