Electric pickups emit less CO2 than the average gas truck anywhere in the US

Electric pickup trucks have a lower carbon footprint than the average gasoline or diesel truck anywhere in the United States, Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) said in the latest update of its ongoing EV emissions analysis.

While electric vehicles have no “pipeline” emissions, the grid electricity used to charge them can be a source of carbon emissions. UCS has been tracking this for about a decade, documenting how Electric cars have become cleaner with the grid because renewables have taken a larger share of electricity generation.

With the significant number of electric pickups hitting the market, UCS was able to include them in its analysis. And despite their relative inefficiency, UCS found that they were still responsible for lower levels of emissions than internal combustion trucks.

“Everywhere in the United States, emissions from driving an EV pickup truck are lower than emissions from driving an EV pickup truck,” said David Reichmuth, senior engineer for the UCS Clean Transportation Program. new petrol or diesel pickups”.

One analysis found that an electric pickup truck reduces emissions by 57% compared to the average petrol truck. As with other electric vehicles, specific emissions levels vary by state and local grid mix.

With the majority of carbon emissions related to the energy in use, your EV is essentially as clean as the grid you plug it into — possibly progressing at a slower rate in some parts of the country with Recent rulings of the Supreme Court limits federal regulatory oversight of power plant emissions. UCS there is a tool to calculate the estimated emissions in your area.

A Harvard study found that the Midwest was most likely to benefit from a shift to cleaner energy sources — and the UCS map still shows that. For that reason, it shows a much narrower advantage for EVs than, for example, in California, where renewable sources make up a much larger share of the grid mix.

And while driving an electric pickup may produce lower emissions than a gasoline or diesel pickup, driving a more efficient electric vehicle is even better. UCS notes that the more efficient the vehicle, the greater the benefits of converting internal combustion to electric power.

Current electric trucks rely on large battery packs to achieve realistic range. UCS notes that smaller battery packs in more efficient vehicles will further reduce emissions, adding that recycling battery materials can further reduce the environmental impact of electric vehicles.
