‘Elden Ring’ is game of the year

In 13 years, FromSoftware did essentially the same game: Six titles include the Soulsbourne series, a series of third-person fantasy role-playing games. Each has its strengths. the soul of the devilthe first, the wildest in its invention; Dark souls characteristic of the most complex world. Dark Souls 2often skewed, deserves a reinstatement for its dizzying series of character builds. Dark Souls 3 There are the best bosses, the most monstrous. Sekiro, released in 2019, was the furthest departure, but introduced stealth and clean, rhythmic combat. Hitherto, Bloodbornereleased in 2015, represented the best combination of sensibility and mechanics of other games.

Elden Rings, released on Friday, builds on the strengths of its predecessors in ways that will appeal to longtime fans and convert new players. This is a game that can’t be made on the first try. It’s the culmination of everything the studio has been and is about, the best game they’ve ever made, and in my opinion, one of the best games of all time.

At the beginning of the game, you create a hideous-looking character — in the tradition of the series — and escape a small cave, learning swordsmanship, shield blocking, and magic along the way. As you step into the beautiful scenery of verdant hills and golden trees, a masked man accuses you of being a “maiden” and suggests you “go and die in a ditch.” As you descend the stone steps toward the forest, an eight-foot golden rider on horseback instantly brutalizes you.

Your journey into one of the great game worlds — a blend of European medieval architecture and Japanese folklore, severely affected of the Berserk manga, by Kentaro Miura, and for this entry, George RR Martin’s suggestion — has begun. Previous entries are linear: Each area, be it a forest, a castle, or a swamp, is connected to each other via narrow paths that push the player forward or sometimes turn themselves around. As Breath of the Wild did for the Legend of Zelda franchise, Elden Ring reimagines Dark souls in an open world. I replayed Dark Souls 3 in preparation for this review, and while it retains many of its charms, after 100 hours its linearity begins to fade; I’ve spent 50 hours exploring the Midlands, and I still don’t know their circumference.

This is a world to lose yourself, between stormy hills and sorcerers’ towers and crystal caverns; between war zones of burnt earth decorated with human limbs, and living mausoleums stamped around on four stone legs. Gates and traps throw you miles around the world; A castle so large and well designed that you would believe it would house a big boss turns out to be just a nice diversion. Galloping aimlessly on Torrent, your summonable divine steed, will quickly find you lost or surrounded by high-level enemies. You must explore methodically and slowly, aided by your hardcore map advice. Right after the boss marks the limit of the network test (the name of the game allows for an invite-only test), there is a moment, set to the orchestral sequence around, when you really get the hang of the scale. of this world.
