With 21 fights under his belt, it looks like it’s time for Conor Benn to enter the final stages.
The undefeated welterweight was played in July with a host of names linked to the Londoners. However, his promoter Eddie Hearn to Andi Purewal of Boxing Social that they could leave that schedule and go into an even bigger fight a month or two later.
Hearn said: “I had a meeting with Conor yesterday. “We are considering whether you fight in July or you go into the biggest possible battle in August or September. Having three or four guys around will make everyone completely foam up in their mouths. I won’t mention them here as we are negotiating at the moment. “
“There’s a chance he’ll go straight into the next big tournament,” he added. “I’m talking loud, loud. The stabilizer is off. We’ll see what happens. We had the 9th of July. It could be Conor, it could be Chisora. We will decide that in the next few days.
“If you listen to Conor and you know what he wants, maybe it’s time to let him go, spread his wings and jump right in with the real big boys.”
With the weight division set to have its champions Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford fighting in an undisputed clash later this year, the question arises as to who fits the criteria Hearn has described.
An associated persistent name is Keith Thurman. The former WBA welterweight champion is Benn’s neighbor in the top 5 on the WBC, WBA and WBO rankings. Benn is also fifth in the IBF ratings. Other options for a “big, big fight” might be Danny Garcia or Mikey Garcia.
Benn just fought last month when he destroyed Chris van Heerden in two rounds, it’s further proof that the world champion contenders need a significant step up in the head-to-head.
