What is the Dutch door?
The Dutch door is quite simply a door that is split in half. In fact, it is often called a half door or a split door.
Dutch doors create an open and inviting feel on the upper half, while protecting and allowing privacy in the lower half. When the connecting hardware is locked, the top and bottom halves combine to act as a single solid door.
These doors were originally created in the Netherlands in the 17th century – intended to keep young children indoors while keeping animals and debris outside. Dutch settlers opened the door to America. and they are often found in the country houses of New York and New Jersey.
On the outside or your home, they can be ideal for entryways, side doors and back doors. Get the fresh breeze and the sun’s rays, but make sure your pets and kids are safely protected indoors.
Interior Dutch doors work well for rooms where you want to keep children and pets out, but still allow light from other rooms to pass through. They work perfectly for a laundry room, mud bath or office if you are considering indoor installation.
Just like main doors, prices for Dutch door hardware fluctuate widely in terms of price and quality of materials.
Dutch door hardware
If you’ve chosen your new door, you’ll now need hardware. That’s where the decisions can get overwhelming!
This type of door requires standard hardware – hinges, door knobs, and latches. However, you will also need a latch or latch to attach and secure the top and bottom when the door is closed.
Hinge
These doors require at least four door hinges (two for each half-door) but a standard door typically uses only three. Standard door hinges will work fine, as long as they are rated for the weight.
Another option is colonial-style hardware like strap hinges, which also add charm to your door.
Knob and lock
On Dutch doors, the door knob (with lock) should be installed on the bottom half to secure the door. Optionally, add a stopper on the top half for added security. This ensures both homes are completely safe!
Fasteners or bolts
The pin or latch secures the top and bottom of the door together. This allows them to function as a full traditional door when the latch is closed.
A quick note: our bolt was accidentally inserted upside down on our door! That’s how it happens when you’re not there to install carpentry… and we’ve grown to love the extra fun and charm it provides.
