Touring tires for heavy bikes need to be made of hard materials. They are expected to last a long time and perform well in hot, cold, wet and dry conditions on all types of roads. Dunlop American Elite tires meet all of these requirements and more. I’ve put them over 1,500 miles on my 2017 Road Glide Ultra since they were highly recommended by the good people at Ventura Harley-Davidson and I’m impressed. In fact, in over 48 years of riding motorcycles (no reviews), this is the best road tire I’ve ever tried.
American Elites offer excellent ride quality, the first line of defense against potholes, seams, and cracks on neglected and sunlit highways where I live in California. Stable and smooth on the highway, when the road surface begins to curve, Dunlops exhibits neutral turning behavior and keeps the road stable. When midcorners need to be tweaked, they respond with great stability and responsiveness. I drove in temperatures ranging from 55 to 113 degrees on tar-filled roads, grooved pavement and other irregularities, and the tire performance remained stable and predictable. . They are exceptionally quiet, with little change in road noise on different surfaces.
Aesthetically, the American Elites are good looking tires with deep storm drains. The front tire is made of single compound while the rear tire uses Dunlop’s Multi Tread technology to provide durability in the center and a firm grip on the shoulders. Dunlop claims the Elites offer longer life, better stability, wetter grip and better impact compliance than the Michelin Commander II. Based on my experience with both tires on my Ultra, I would agree.
These are premium tires that will enhance the enjoyment and safety of riding an American-made motorcycle. I enthusiastically support them two thumbs!
