• Is the weather a concern before today’s game? A trip to the office on a suburban train in Chennai gives you a clear view of the Chepauk turf and by 7:56 am it’s drizzling. Not a stable one though; a drop here and a drop there. The yard area is completely covered, the canvas is completely wet. There were no players or officials in sight, with two shamianas set up in front of the international press box for the players.

The Duleep Trophy was reintroduced after a three-season gap. The tournament was last held during the 2019-20 season in Bengaluru. Six teams – North Zone, North Zone, West Zone, East Zone, South Zone and Central Zone – will take part in India’s new domestic season kick-off competition.

MATCH PREFERENCE

S. Dinakar from Puducherry wrote: It rained quite heavily on Wednesday night. And more rain was forecast for all four days of this encounter in the revived Duleep Trophy.

Both the North and East Zones will be monitoring the weather with particular interest ahead of their quarter-finals which begin here on Thursday; it will affect their strategy and the selection of 11 people.

Rain or shine, Duleep Trophy will return in its original inter-regional format. Then the matches will have context and purpose.

The Duleep Trophy, once the pride of India’s domestic calendar, has been thoughtlessly rendered into a caricature with teams called Red, Blue, Green, etc – and chosen at random. from different parts of the country, resulting in the parties having minimal cohesion.

And they were made to play day/night matches with the pink balls.

The current version, while welcome, won’t have patches for the Duleep Trophy matches of the 70s and 80s when those games almost had the aura of a Test match.

The North Zone, led by the immaculate Bishen Bedi and home to the Amarnath brothers, Rajinder Goel and Kapil Dev will face off against the West Division led by Sunil Gavaskar with men like Dilip Vengsarkar, Sandip Patil, Padmakar Shivalkar and Pandurang Salgoankar.

Matches will be intense and sparks will fly.

And the Starry South Zone will feature Gundappa Viswanath, Tiger Pataudi, Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekar, S. Venkatraghavan, Syed Kirmani, Brijesh Patel, Roger Binny and K. Srikkanth.

But with a cramped international calendar, it’s impossible to lift the Duleep Trophy to those glory days again.

However, it will be a good opportunity for young players like North’s Yash Dhull to showcase his talents and speed racer Navdeep Saini to re-establish his claim.

Despite his success in the political sphere, it’s good to see Manoj Tiwary, the leader of East, retaining his passion for the game. Left-hander Shahbaz Nadeem is a capable pitcher and Shahbaz Ahmed is an all-rounder with promise.
