Some Republican lawmakers are criticizing the Manhattan grand jury Thursday’s indictment of Donald Trump. Here’s what they’re saying:

Senator John Cornyna member of the Senate GOP leadership, told CNN that Trump’s indictment “for me, this is an opportunity for this [district attorney] to try to make headlines and get the public’s attention.

Congressman James Comer: The The Speaker of the House Oversight has attacked former President Donald Trump’s “political witch hunt” a day after he was indicted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

“One thing that concerns us in Washington, Congressman Jordan and myself, is whether there is coordination underway here between Merrick Garland, the DOJ and all the different entities that are pursuing Donald Trump. no,” Comer told Fox Friday. “This is a political witch hunt, they are doing everything in their power to create a story that can hurt Donald Trump.”

Comer told CNN that Bragg’s investigation was “a political stunt.”

Before the indictment, Comer and two other House Speakers sent letters requesting testimony and information from Bragg about his investigation.

Senator John Barrasso: The The GOP Senate Conference President called the indictment a “political undertaking” in a statement to CNN.

“This is a politically motivated prosecution by a far-left activist. If it had been anyone other than President Trump, a case like this would never have been made. Instead of ordering political work, New York prosecutors should focus on getting violent criminals off the streets,” he said.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene: Key Trump ally, who is also close to the GOP House leader, tweeted that she has plans during a trip to New York City on Tuesday to protest the indictment of Donald Trump – the latest sign that Republicans are racing to defend the former president.

Greene serves on the House Oversight Committee, one of the key committees trying to investigate the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, and told CNN she regularly updates Trump on his investigative priorities. Surname.

Representative Mike Johnson: Johnson, a member of the House Republican leadership team, attacked Bragg and said the indictment “all but guarantees” former President Donald Trump will be the Republican presidential nominee.

“The one who smeared the integrity, the integrity of our entire judicial system is Alvin Bragg, this Political activist sponsored by Soros who is occupying the office of the Manhattan DA,” Johnson said on Fox News on Friday. “He is devoting all his time and resources to pursuing the former President. Why? The timing is crucial, because the President has announced that he will run for re-election.”

The indictment has “assured” that Trump will be the Republican presidential nominee “and potentially re-elected” in 2024, Johnson added.

Representative Barry Moore, a conservative Republican who endorsed Trump, defended Republicans who attacked Bragg before seeing any evidence against Trump. Moore said the indictment “smelt pretty fishy.”

When asked if he would consider reassessing after seeing the evidence, Moore replied: “I’m willing to think about that. But I’m in the trash business, you know, and a lot of times, I know how to spot a pile of trash, and this thing looks like a pile of trash.”

He predicted that the indictment could actually help Trump’s presidential chances. Moore himself was indicted and ultimately found not guilty of perjury in 2014, when he was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives.

“After I was indicted, that weekend we had more people knocking on our door than at any other time in our campaign,” he added. “… We did, because people saw how it was. I think the American people see this as it is.”
