Director La-Mulana removes the little-known Konami MSX IP after winning the contest
La-Mulana Series director Takumi Naramura has proven his talent in creating MSX computer-inspired games and now it looks like he’s getting his hands on one of the most popular games on the system. . The director won a contest held by Konami for a chance to remake the 1987 classic, Galious Labyrinth, Report of IGN.
So how did Naramura get the chance to direct this remake? By winning a year-long contest. Konami organized this to give indie developers a chance to show off their skills and revive some of Konami’s older titles. And Naramura took first place, as announced at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.
Maze of Galious is the sequel to the 1986 game Knightmare, and along with the MSX release, it also had a Japan-only release on the Famicom. Today, this side-scrolling action RPG is considered one of the best on the system, with reviews at the time praising the graphics and music. Now, it was the game that inspired La-Mulana and it next part will be reimagined by the director of those bizarre platform indie gems.
In an interview with IGN, Naramura said that he didn’t think The Maze of Galious would even be on the original list that IP developers might try to remake. So creator La-Mulana reached out to his team to see how they could bring back this little-known classic. Though he admits he thinks it might have limited appeal, telling the publication “I think most people have seen that list and said ‘Gradius, that’s cool, Goemon, I like that thing. there,’ so they might be disappointed that Galious was chosen.”
Well, we weren’t disappointed! It’s great to see these forgotten classics brought back. We don’t know what platforms this remake will come to or even when it will launch, but we’re looking forward to hearing more about it. You can watch the original version of the game in the video below:
