Deadly beautiful

Season of the Deep will feature three new armor decorations, one for each Guardian class, inspired by the three biggest games in PlayStation history. Titans will feel at home in the new “Godsbane” decor, inspired by Sony Santa Monica’s God of War. Guerrilla’s Horizon Forbidden West inspired the “Annointed” set for Hunters, creating an ideal interface for any activity that requires wit, agility, and more than a modicum of deadly power. In the end, honor and precision were the hallmarks of that Warlock lifestyle, and this is perfectly represented with the “Ancestors” decor, inspired by the open-world masterpiece of the Warlock. Sucker Punch, Ghost of Tsushima. Besides the decorations, there is also a finishing trio inspired by the same game: “From Nowhere” (Horizon Zero Dawn), “Whirling Chaos” (God of War) and “Perfect Strike” (Ghost of Tsushima ).

Bungie’s art lead Josh Deeb said: “The origin of any armor begins with a question, ‘What is magic?’ “There are some obvious sources of inspiration – [God of War’s] Kratos is a mighty force leading the way into battle, Aloy [from the Horizon series] is a machine hunter who survives in a harsh world, and [Ghost of Tsushima’s] Jin has combined hard training with a seemingly supernatural fighting ability.”

Once the team has identified the fantasy image, it’s time to discuss which traits best represent the characters and how those traits can be represented in the armor. As Deeb said, each character has something unique to show and the team spent a lot of time perfecting those details to bring them to life.

“Firstly [concern] is a more direct reimagining of the details of costumes, items, and weapons,” says Deeb. “Then there are the less tangible aspects – their personality and presence. In other words, do these decorations resemble these characters?

Aloy influence

“For Aloy, it’s about embracing the combination of technology [and] handmade, natural materials. We spent a lot of time working to make sure the details were correct,” says Deeb. “This includes things like building a version of Focus on the helmet, combining two different styles of armor from each game, and even making sure the stitching on the Hunter’s cape is exactly the way it should be. Aloy’s clan makes their clothes.”

“Combining two powerful and visually defined IPs into an outstanding collaborative design has always been a challenge. In the case of Destiny and Horizon, the former has a high-tech and synthetic look, while the latter feels more natural and primitive. The trick is to find the common ground of both projects. What really makes this costume design work is figuring out the key points where the visual universes overlap and then using those points as ‘visual anchors’ to integrate the Horizon material feel. organic, unique into Destiny’s universe. In this case, the overlaps are sci-fi elements, such as the mechanical plating from various Horizon costumes and the hologram effect from Aloy’s Focus gear. And, of course, the Hunter is a perfect match for the Nora-themed outfit.

Kratos craft

“With Kratos, we would be remiss not to put his iconic tattoos front and center of the design,” says Deeb. “Moreover, it’s all about showing the power and authority of the character. We wanted to make sure our Titans felt as if they could go out and kill a god or two when they put on this armor. And of course, we could have given a nod to the beard in the helmet design.

“Throughout every chapter of the God of War franchise, from the first to the most recent, Kratos has always had recognizable elements in his design, such as tattoos and weapons. When making God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, we took great care to retain the iconic elements that have always been an integral part of Kratos’ design. Working with the Destiny team has been very satisfying as we were able to see how those elements shift and remain clear in an amazing, futuristic field. The way the tattoos, Blades of Chaos and Guardian Shield are integrated with the sci-fi armor makes them feel natural in the world of Destiny, while still clearly reading Ghost of Sparta.”

Inspiration Jin

“And with Jin, we had the advantage of having some iconic masks to work with the source material. This creates an unmistakable immediate impact. We wanted to explore the combination of intricate armor sets players could wear and create a sci-fi samurai silhouette befitting our warrior-scholars, the Warlocks.”

“As a fan of the Destiny series, it was exciting to see a version of Jin’s iconic Ghost Armor make its way into this universe. The artists at Bungie have done a great job of taking elements of historic Japanese armor and combining them with their own sci-fi inspired art style. My favorite aspect is the combination of a traditional samurai half-mask (menpo) with a samurai-style head knot to create a unique and cohesive hard-surface mask. They also use period-accurate thigh armor (haidate) and put their own spin on it, extending it below the body to create the distinctive Warlock silhouette. It turned out to be a great implementation of taking an aesthetic that was really popular 800 years ago and taking it into the distant conceptual future.”

In addition to the decorations, the Bungie team worked with the team at Insomniac to create a new Ratchet & Clank-inspired emoji, as well as with Naughty Dog on two new vehicles and an accessory inspired by the Ratchet & Clank. The Last of Us. A ghost shell, a ship, and a sparrow are available, each affected by the Cordyceps fungus that fuels the game’s famous story. “We know that the environment in the game becomes part of the story as well as the characters and players within it,” Deeb said of the Cordyceps infected look. “We wanted to take the evocative infected images of the mutated fungus and get it to invade our world.”

Bungie artist Ben Platnick says that transitioning The Last of Us’ gritty realist art style to Destiny’s upbeat sci-fi style was an interesting challenge for the team. “The solution there is to combine the way we do spore-like VFX in Destiny, such as the Egregore found in Haunted Leviathan, with the movement and color patterns we see in The Last of Us, produces a home-like outcome in both universes.”

“When the Destiny 2 team approached us with the prospect of bringing The Last of Us into the next season, we were excited about the opportunity. The Last of Us is known as a very realistic and human experience, while Destiny 2 offers players an epic sci-fi world with elements of fantasy and mythology. Playing in that sandbox is something quite unique and exciting for us and we can’t ignore it. When the team showed us the concept art of a cordyceps mushroom design on the inorganic materials of the Destiny ship, Sparrow, and Ghost, the idea made a lot of sense. The combination of organic and inorganic materials seemed like a harmonious approach to bring The Last of Us-inspired design to their world. Working very closely with the Bungie team, we helped develop our specific cordyceps design; from a large central vein mixed with clusters of smaller and fan-like spreading fungal tissue at the end of the tendon. Then, when the design was placed on the Ghost shell, we had to add an additional Easter egg element to it. That we will let players discover.”

When you’re not maxing out your Guardian speed or wallowing in the new adventures that make up Season of the Deep, there’s a new pastime waiting for you: a new fishing experience. While exploring underwater, the Guardians will discover fishing gear and, with the help of a longtime friend, will scour some of the main fishing holes across the solar system in search of catch that’s perfect. Players will earn more than just a good story to tell; fishing will… ahem… players earn additional rewards including new and returning Seasonal armor, crafting materials, etc.

“Fishing is meant to give players a chance to escape the frenetic pace of combat and spend time relaxing and bonding with other Guardians, while earning rewards and progressing towards some of their other goals. in This Season,” said Bungie System Designer Corey Willis. “We wanted to keep it simple and rely on existing gaming systems to keep it familiar, while pushing the boundaries of how we ask players to interact with those systems in the process. past.”
