Andy Fletcher, keyboardist and founding member of Depeche Mode, has died aged 60.

The band revealed the news in a social media post, writing: “We are shocked and overwhelmed with sadness at the recent passing of our dear friend, family member and band member. ours.

“Fletch has a real heart of gold and is always there when you need support, lively chat, big smile or cold.

“Our hearts go out to his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Fletcher’s cause of death is still unknown.

The keyboardist founded Depeche Mode in Basildon, Essex, in 1980 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two years ago.

The band has had 17 top UK albums and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

They were part of a new wave in the UK following the release of their debut album Speak and Spell in 1981.

Their subsequent albums ensured that they were a dominant force in the electronic music scene by the end of the decade – with Personal Jesus, Shake The Disease and Everything Counts being among their most popular.

Lol Tolhurst, drummer for The Cure, shared a heartfelt tribute to Fletcher after learning of his death.

He tweeted: “Very sad news today. Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode has passed away.

“I know Andy and consider him a friend. We have crossed many paths like young men.

“My heart goes out to his family, bandmates and DM fans. RIP Fletch.”
