Demon 170’s ‘Skinny’ Front Tires Bigger Than Challenger SXT

Last night, Dodge took down the Oddest Challenger: Demon SRT 170makes 1,025 hp on the E85 and is capable 0-60 for 1.66 seconds and quarter mile 8.91 seconds (on a prepared drag strip, with a real hot shoe at the handlebars). Aside from horsepower, much of that acceleration comes from the tires, the Mickey Thompson ET Street R pulls radially, barely street-legal, and engineered for drag-band performance. The Demon 170 accentuates the slim-front-fat-rear staggered tire setup by omitting the wide-body flares at the front, but a closer look reveals that those “thin” front tires aren’t too thin. In fact, they’re getting bigger and bigger than The spare tire you get on a Challenger SXT powered by a base model V6 engine.

The Demon 170’s front tire measures 245/55R-18, mounted on lightweight 18 x 8-inch wheels that are all aluminum or optionally aluminum and carbon fiber. Of course, the rear tire is monstrous, 315/50R-17s on 17 x 11 inch wheels. Dodge had to modify the Challenger’s rear suspension to accommodate those near-slippery cuts of meat, but let’s focus on the front tire for a moment, because a Challenger SXT without the option will roll off the wheel. dealer with number 235/55R-18 all season.

Remember how tire size works: The first number is the tread width, in millimeters; the second number is the aspect ratio — in other words, the sidewall height is measured as a percentage of the tread width. The last number is the diameter of the wheel. So the front tire of Demon 170 is 245 mm wide at the groove and side wall is 55 percent of 245mm, while the Challenger SXT’s tires (all four) are 235mm wide with 55% of 235mm sidewalls.

Here is an easier way to understand it. According to TireSize.comdemon 170The front 245s have an overall diameter of 28.6 inches and a width of 9.6 inches; from the same siteChallenger SXT’s 235s measure 28.2 inches in diameter and 9.3 inches wide when fitted.

In other words, the 245s aren’t really as thin as a tire, and they’re not even the smallest tire on offer on the Challenger platform for casual everyday buyers.. This becomes relevant when you recall that demon Dodge Challenger SRT 2018, offers really slim front tires for drag racing as part of Optional Devil Box $1. The previous runner tires were too small for street use (so Dodge only sells them to you in a separate box from the car), and apparently, the ethanol-powered Demon 170 isn’t even need those race-specific tires. Thin tires to wipe out the old Demon’s 9.65 quarter mile second time.
