Senate Democrats’ months-long effort to negotiate a budget reconciliation bill with ambitious climate change provisions crash last week when Senator Joe Manchin announced he would not support the proposed legislation. It now seems unlikely that Congress will pass any substantive environmental legislation before this year’s midterm elections. And even though President Biden released several executive orders on Wednesday to tackle climate change – and more are expected to be announced in the coming days – activists have criticized the measures as not going far enough.

This lack of action on climate change is becoming a real problem for Democrats, because that’s what their voters really want. In mid-January, Pew Research Centerasked Americans which of the 18 issues should be prioritized by Congress and the president, and 65% of Democrats chose climate change, ranking it as their fourth most important issue. surname.

For the most part, Democrats fully support the Biden administration’s policies against climate change: 79%, according to a survey conducted by Pew in early May, said Biden’s environmental policies have put the country on the right track. The problem is, even among Democrats who endorse the Biden administration’s approach, three-fifths (61%) still think the administration can do more – and it’s even happening. before Manchin defeated the Democrats’ latest environmental policy efforts.

This has created a situation where the Democratic Party, especially younger people, dissatisfied with the way climate change is being addressed. Younger Americans of both parties are more likely than older Americans to rate climate change as a top priority, and in a Pew poll from May, younger Democrats were also more likely to rate climate change as a priority. more likely to say that the Biden administration should do more. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of American adults under the age of 30 said the government should do more, compared with 54% of those over 65 who said the same.

Why don’t Democratic politicians do more to prioritize this issue, given its importance to Democratic voters? Climate change is not an issue that other Americans prioritize.

It’s easy to laugh, I told you so. I mean, no one looking at Biden’s track record would expect any actual performance during his tenure.

But the fact that so many young people still worry about getting sick from the illusion that the world is going through a climate crisis is so tragic it makes me want to laugh.
