Airlines in the United States have experienced delays and cancellations not uncommon in the past year. Staff shortages mean a single problem, like power cut or a storm, which can cause a host of scheduling problems across the country. However, not like in Europe, no network operator has encountered a shutdown. Delta will likely be dealing with a pilot strike in the near future.

Delta Air Lines pilot can now vote against or allow a strike. The Airline Pilots Association, which represents Delta’s 14,600 pilots, has been negotiating with Delta since February 2020. Talks have been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Negotiations resumed at the beginning of the year, but both sides failed to reach an agreement.

Captain Jason Ambrosi, Chairman of the Delta ALPA Executive Board, said in a statement:

“This is an important step in our efforts to secure a comprehensive, industry-leading contract. We do not take a decision like this lightly. However, we were long overdue for the new agreement. We intend to send a strong message to management that Delta’s 14,600 pilots are willing to go the distance to land the contract we have earned.”

“We have made progress on some parts of the contract but for now we are only discussing the high value items. This spring and summer, Delta pilots have flown record-breaking overtime to help Delta run its overly ambitious schedule. We are tired of the empty circumstances of the management. It’s time for Delta to get serious at the negotiating table.”

The voting window for Delta pilots will close on October 31 at 2:00 p.m. ET. It is inevitable that the vote will lead to a strike if the pilots vote to allow the work stoppage. The National Conciliation Commission will be available to arbitrate the dispute. If that fails, there will be a 30-day cooling period, similar to what happened before the advertised rail strike.
