Share with fellow dog lovers!
If there’s one food that everyone either loves or hates, it’s anchovies! However, most dogs agree and offer a large paw to the anchovies. These can be served with your dog’s meal, but dehydrated anchovies for dogs really make a great value!
Is anchovies good for dogs?
Anchovies are a great dog’s food–And they love it! It contains Omega-3 fatty acids like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) – which can help condition your dog’s skin and coat. It is even recommended for brain health for puppies.
What kind of anchovies should I buy for my dog?
You are looking for anchovies in olive oil. (They are also sold with salt, garlic, and spices. You want pure anchovies in olive oil.)
I bought the flattest fillets that remove water the fastest.
Can I make dried anchovies for dogs in my oven?
It’s correct! Anchovies can become dehydrated in your oven.
Personally, I prefer to dehydrate the anchovies in the dehydrator because it doesn’t heat the house – and because I have the option of moving the dehydrator off the deck if the house starts to smell a bit like anchovies.
However, you can also dehydrate them in the oven. Set the oven to the lowest temperature. If you have a grill rack raised with a quarter pan underneath, that will work best. This allows air and heat to reach all sides of the anchovies to dehydrate:
How to cook anchovies to dehydrate
Don’t worry… you don’t have much preparation to do. (You are not fish fillets here!)
Open the can of anchovies and drain. Rinse the anchovies to remove the oil for faster dehydrating, then lay the anchovies on paper towels:
Cover with another tissue…
and dry.
That’s it! Now you are ready for the dehydrator.
Dehydrated anchovies
Spread the anchovies on a dehydrator tray so that each piece has plenty of airflow around.
As you can see, I used dewatering filter mesh on top of the dehydrator tray to prevent the small anchovies files from sagging as they dry.
You do NOT want to let the two pieces touch each other. This will prevent dehydration in that area.
OK, start your dehydrator!
Dehydrated how long to treat these dogs?
The time it takes to dehydrate an anchovy dog will depend on several factors:
- Your dehydrator and the temperature it is set to. My dehydrator has one setting – 160 degrees F – but some have adjustable thermostats.
- Humidity level in your home. The more humid the surrounding air is, the longer the dehydration process takes place.
- Other dewatering trays. Since dehydration is an all-day affair, I always refill the trays when I’m dehydrating, either with the same food or with different foods. (When dehydrating foods other than anchovies, be aware that they may absorb some of the flavors of anchovies. Since dogs love anchovies, I only made recipes for them. other dogs are dehydrated at the same time – if they pick up some fishy treats, the dogs will be delighted!)
In my dehydrator, it took three hours for the anchovies to dry to a crisp crisp, perfect to carry in my dog walker bag!
