Dogs are very good at making friends. Most of them can walk up to another person or dog and instantly fall in love. However, some dogs have developed unique friendships beyond humans and other pets.
A 9-year-old dog named Huey recently introduced himself to a deer peeping through the fence in his yard. At first, Huey didn’t know what to think about this particular creature, but it didn’t take long for the two animals to bond. Now, they can’t resist having a friendly chat on a daily basis.
Deer looking for bird seeds
When Holly Faulconer saw a deer stealing food from her bird feeder, she didn’t chase the deer away. Instead, she gazed at the beautiful creature with amusement. Little does she know, the decision to leave the deer alone will greatly help her dog’s social life.
After grabbing a snack, the deer peeked over the fence, causing her to spot Huey. Huey stood on his hind legs and put his feet on the fence so he and the deer could introduce themselves. Faulconer decided to name the deer Sassafras.
Faulconer said: “At first, Huey was a little confused and certainly very cautious. “I will just talk to both of them and make sure they both feel safe. Little by little, they just started talking over the fence!
Although Sassafras came to the house to collect bird seeds, she went away with something even more precious: a new best friend!
An unlikely form of friendship
Now, whenever Sassafras returns, her priority is no longer eating out of the bird feeder. Instead, she looked over the fence to see if Huey was there. Almost every day Sassafras stops by to chat with his canine companion.
Faulconer is surprised at Huey’s new friendship as he is often protective of his mother. So it’s surprising that he decided to quickly recognize the deer as a friend rather than a threat.

“This deer visits several times a week,” says Faulconer. “Had a few visits but now they are friends.”
Faulconer posted a short video of the deer and dog interaction on Instagram, and people quickly fell in love with the unusual duo. Seeing two animals of different species form a bond is always a heartwarming experience, so hopefully the two will continue to hang out together as much as possible.
