Dear American Airlines customers, today your pilot is a student of United Airlines

When you are traveling, how do you usually think about your pilot?

Do you listen to their voices and wonder if they sound mellow? I admit I have. British, Polish and Croatian pilots are often among my favorites for cockpit calming.

However, do you still wonder where your pilots were the night before and if they were having an excessively good time?

Wondering how many hours they’ve flown or, perhaps, are they really training for a different airline?

No, I haven’t reviewed it before. It seems odd, doesn’t it?

But I only ask because a great announcement that caught my attention by Ethan Klapper’s Point guy.

it came courtesy of Mesa Air Group. This is an airline that flies under different logos – such as United Express, DHL Express and American Eagle.

It’s a regional airline where many pilots start their careers flying smaller planes before switching to more mainstream airlines.

Many Mesa pilots participate in the United Aviate program. Given the pilot shortage, this is an important way for United to get more pilots on its wings.

For understandable reasons, Mesa pilots with United Aviate were previously only able to receive credit hours for flying United Express aircraft.

But now they can fly American Airlines customers under the American Eagle banner and earn full credit for being a United Airlines pilot.

When I first learned of this, I wondered whose generosity was at the heart of this move. Mesa’s press release states: “Mesa is pleased to announce this opportunity to our pilots and thanks United for extending the program’s transitional eligibility requirements.”

United is great. And how convenient that Mesa and United Airlines pilots are represented by the same union, the Airline Pilots Association.

However, I wonder how an American Airlines customer might feel if they knew a United Airlines intern was flying them.

Or, really, how American Airlines feels. With my usual naivety, I asked the airline to show it, but haven’t heard back.

And what of the pilots in the main Americans? Could they see this development as another development in the airline’s eyes?

American Airlines’ pilots union has long tarnished the airline’s image — and allegedly it is. They argue that American’s management simply isn’t up to the task of managing through the post-pandemic customer surge.

Oh, and they also want higher wages. Strangely, the Americans just for pilots at two regional airlines, Piedmont and Envoy Air.

American Airlines pilots made the video shows that the life of an American Airlines pilot is a long-haul flight to purgatory, bogged down by organizational incompetence. They even made a video it’s clear that Delta and United are much better airlines.

And now some junior pilots will fly American Airlines flights while receiving United credit hours? It feels like flying in the US and getting regular United miles.

It’s not a perfect brand look, is it?

Of course, this may have crossed United’s mind.
