Data requests cost individual UK businesses up to £336,000 a year

New research has revealed that Data Object Access Requests (DSARs) are costing individual businesses in the UK between £72,000 – £336,000 a year.

DSAR is when an individual asks a company to see all the data that company holds. Complying with such a requirement, which business owners are obligated to do, can be an expensive process, especially if a company receives a large volume.

Analysis from the Data Privacy Group corroborates this, finding that major UK firms are assigned a minimum of 6 DSARs a month, rising to 28 for some. With each claim worth around £1,000, the costs add up quickly.

The number of DSARs a company receives often reflects the level of dissatisfaction of their workforce and customer base. Not surprisingly, the coronavirus and its subsequent impact on people’s jobs and the standard of service companies are able to deliver has contributed to a sharp increase in requests, with complicated planning. Complexity and redundancy are the main drivers.

To reduce the cost of processing requests, the Data Privacy Team recommends companies invest in a security program that already works. This not only allows companies to efficiently deal with requests as and when they come in but and perhaps more importantly, it ensures total compliance across the enterprise.

Many organizations cannot set up a security program because of its upfront cost. However, the Data Privacy Team warns the cost of non-compliance is much greater than this and will save companies money in the long run.

Peter Borner, co-founder of Data security team, commented: “During the course of the pandemic, we have seen an increase in the number of DSARs being performed, which in our experience is often the result of unhappy employees or customers. heart.

“By enlisting the support of an operational security program, business owners can be confident that they are managing their incoming requests efficiently and in compliance. For example, understand what information they are obligated to share and which information is not. While it is true that the setup will cost the company an initial upfront fee, the company will earn this back from the effective management of any future claims.”
