Before Danny Garcia hangs up his boxing gloves for good, there’s one more thing he wants to achieve. With world titles in two separate weight classes, the Philadelphia-born player is extremely proud of what he has achieved. With that said, he believes there will be a hole in his resume if his career ends sooner than expected.
“I want to be world champion in three divisions,” Garcia said in a self-recorded video. “That’s my dream.”
Currently, Garcia is 2/3 of the way. From 2012-2015, Garcia dominated the 140-pound class as world champion. After taking on all the divisions, Garcia will give up her title to move into the heavyweight division. Once he sets foot in his new home, it won’t be long before he’ll be crowned world champion.
After winning in the 1/8 round against Paulie Malignaggi, Garcia overtook Robert Guerrero to become a player with a two-team title. Since then, however, Garcia has seen the highest highs and lowest lows. The Philadelphia star is just 3-3 in his past six games. Most recently, he suffered the heaviest defeat of his career, a decisive defeat at the hands of Errol Spence Jr in December 2020.
While the 33-year-old was preparing to move into the super-heavyweight category, he admitted to hearing whispers from others who were giving advice. Regardless of who gives their opinion, Garcia believes he must follow in the footsteps of those who came before him.
“Everybody says don’t gain 154 but you have to understand, all great people gain weight.”
If Garcia moves 7 pounds north, he will meet a host of top-level contenders and world champions. Despite sharing a division with unified champions like Jermell Charlo, WBO belt holder Brian Castano, and high-ranked rivals Erickson Lubin and Tim Tszyu, Garcia can’t believe he’ll finish. fulfill his dream of becoming a three-tier world champion.
“I want to fight anyone at 154. I feel better than everyone at 154.”
