Create Beautiful Portraits With Hard Light

When you think of portraiture, you probably think of large diffused light. However, there are many applications of hard light in portraiture, of which beauty is only one category. In this video, watch Lindsay Adler create stunning portraits with harsh lighting.

I’ve never taken so many good photos, but on the occasions when I’m asked to do so, I always go straight into the hard light. Hard light is generally defined as direct, bright, non-diffusing light that casts shadows on the subject. If put in the wrong context, it can be unsightly and jarring to look at, but when used correctly, it produces impressive and memorable results.

In this video, Lindsay Adler uses direct light on her model, including shots that favor harsher shadows. By adding a gobo, shadows can be used to create patterns. This could be something as simple as a leaf or a window frame to give it a more natural feel, or something weird like the pattern Adler uses here that starts to resemble a tattoo. This can take a rather plain image to a completely different place, leaving a more lasting impression on the view.

How often do you use hard lights? If so, when did you approach that style of lighting? Share your experience in the comments below.
