Comic-Con won’t Comic without cosplay.
Various parts of the event such as Hall of Fame and the comics themselves, getting dressed up in fancy costumes — or seeing people dressed up in fancy costumes — is one of the main reasons people attend. This year, cosplay is even more important. Due to health concerns about the spread of Covid-19, has not had a live Comic-Con for the past two years. Last weekend, when the event once again flooded the streets of San Diego, cosplayers returned as well.
But not without some, um, modifications. Just because Comic-Con is hosting this year’s IRL event doesn’t mean Covid is over — far from it — so everyone must take precautions to stay safe, namely by wearing masks. Cosplayers are used to wearing masks by now, but the ones needed to prevent the spread of contagion aren’t necessarily the ones Spider-Man wears. So, as expected, fans got creative.
WIRED asked the photographer Daniel Goncalves to attend last week’s convention and find cosplayers with some of the most creative masks around. He’s found some great ones — and some with no masks at all.
