Cleveland Cavaliers, Darius Garland agree 5-year rookie extension worth up to $231 million, reps say


Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Protection Darius Garland agreed to a five-year, $193 million, maximum rookie contract extension that could be worth up to $231 million, said his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul. , told ESPN Saturday.

Garland’s deal is the richest deal in Cavaliers history and comes after a breakout third season, which included him averaging 21.7 points and 8.6 assists per game, a first ever honored as an All-Star and elevated the franchise to an Eastern Conference play-in tournament.

He’s one of the cornerstones of a promising Cavaliers core that includes an All-Star hub Jarrett Allen and rising star Evan Mobley. The #5 pick in the 2019 NBA draft, Garland helped the Cavaliers complete the .500 mark for the first time since LeBron James remaining in 2018.

Garland needs to be voted into one of three All-NBA teams next season to earn the $231 million super max escalator.
