Classic Hot Toddy – A Beautiful Mess
I love a hot good-natured child. A classic version is usually made with just four ingredients: hot water, whiskey or bourbon, lemon, and honey.
It’s a fairly light cocktail that you can sip slowly and warm yourself up. A great choice for the cold winter months.
A hot starter wine tastes like a slightly sweeter version of whatever wine you used to make it. So use a whiskey, bourbon or rum that you enjoy sipping as the flavors will pass through.
Also, since hot water is a big part of this cocktail, I prefer plain water. Basically, if you don’t like the taste of tap water, you might want to find an alternative (like getting a filter) because you might end up tasting it in a hot baby.
I have a specific order I want to add hot ingredients to because it makes the process a little easier. First, I put the whiskey and honey in a cup, then I poured the hot water in (and stirred a few times to make sure the honey was dissolved) then I added the lemon. That’s it!
You can bring the water to a boil if you want (or use tea kettle), but my kettle has a temperature reader on it, and I tend to use water between 140°F and 150°F. This is hot, but not boiling hot.
I want to be able to sip my hot sandwiches almost immediately after I’m done.
What are the ingredients of a hot kid?
Hot water, whiskey, honey and lemon.
Since it’s so simple, use water that tastes good and the whiskey (or bourbon, or rum) you enjoy sipping on. I like Mark’s Markbut there are many options.
Maybe you want to spice it up? Here are some things I sometimes mix into a simple hot kid’s play:
- tea—any flavor that matches the spirit you’re using (I like things like lemon, ginger, or cinnamon)
- apple cider mix
- oranges or citrus other than lemons
- cinnamon sticks
- spices like nutmeg or turmeric

Classic Honey Toddy
a simple hot cocktail with only four ingredients
-
1
ounce
whiskey
or bourbon -
first
Cup
hot water -
2
teaspoon
Beloved husband - Lemon
-
Add whiskey and honey to the cup.
-
Add hot water. I like to heat water between 140°F and 150°F, but you can usually make hot tea at any temperature.
-
Stir until the honey dissolves.
You can trade lemons for any citrus including oranges. Squeeze to release some juice, or you can peel and add it as garnish.
Here are a few things you can add to spice up a simple gravy: cinnamon sticks, seasonings like nutmeg or turmeric, cider mix, tea that matches the brandy you’re using.
You can use whiskey, bourbon, or rum—just use a wine you’ll be sipping on (not white rum or something that should be mixed with stronger flavoring ingredients).
