BEIJING – China has reduced the quarantine period for international travelers to two days, state media said on Friday.

According to state media, instead of requiring visitors to stay in a centralized quarantine facility for seven days upon arrival in the country, the new rules prescribe a five-day quarantine, followed by three days of home supervision, according to state media. state media.

The new time frame also applies to close contacts of people with Covid in China, the report said.

In contact tracing, China said it will no longer track people other than close contacts with Covid-19 infections. In the past, people connected to those close contacts may have faced additional Covid restrictions.

The new measures have reduced the number of regional risk designations to two from three – both low and high, the report said.

Overall, the new measures emphasize home quarantine rather than centralized quarantine.

China grapples with zero-Covid policy

The measures also end a policy that has often resulted in the number of international flights, which were already operating at a reduced rate, being cancelled.

These measures call for the establishment of a bubble for entrepreneurs or sports teams to enter China. The report said people entering the bubble from China need to be vaccinated and may need to be quarantined after the event is over.

Immediately after the announcement, Hang Seng Index spiked and rose 7%, building on an earlier rally, following US data showing relief from the recent rise in inflation.

Travel-related stocks see gains, with China Eastern Airlines climb to 6% and Cathay Pacific up nearly 3% in the afternoon session.

Casino operator MGM China, Wynn Macau and Sands China All have stocks that are up about 8%.

China has stuck with its strict zero-Covid policy, while the rest of the world has switched to a “live with Covid” approach.

Beijing’s insistence on what it calls a “no-Covid movement” has been done with considerable variation at the local level, causing great uncertainty and impeding travel.
