China denied that it was trying to take over the moon through space program, an interest expressed by NASA administrator Bill Nelson in a recent interview.
Nelson said to Germany’s Bild on July 2, “We must be very concerned that China is landing on the moon and saying: It’s ours now and you guys stay away.”
The purpose of China’s space program, Nelson said, “is a military space program,” and its achievements are built on technology theft.
Chinese authorities have denied Nelson’s allegations.
“This is not the first time a NASA administrator has attacked China without regard to the facts,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.

China announces plans to build a permanent moon basewhich they see as a stepping stone for the rest of the solar system, and a manned mission to Mars. The United States may have planned for a permanent moon base in 1980 during the Apollo program, served by nuclear-powered launchers, such as launchers that Russia is said to have developedbut the plans were shelved after the US anti-nuclear movement spooked politicians.
In 2019 US abandons plans for a nuclear missile programperhaps in response to Russian advances, but I can’t find any news about the US’s imminent nuclear space launch plan.
