Child marriage: ‘I should have been protected’

When Farhana was 16, she was taken out of the UK and married to a man she did not know.

Looking back, she believes her life would have been different had the UK law banned marriage under the age of 18.

“My mother is a law-abiding citizen, she would never have thought of marrying me if she thought it was illegal.”

It is difficult to put a number on how many underage girls in the UK are forced or coerced into marriage.

Payzee Mahmod is one of them and so is her sister Banaz.

While Payzee escapes, her sister is murdered in an honor killing.

Payzee says the law needs to change to protect children from forced marriages.

That change could happen today as the government is backing a bill to raise the minimum age of marriage from 16 to 18 in England and Wales.
