Check baggage Aston Martin DBX

Does it really matter how much can fit into one’s cargo area? Aston Martin? Yes! The brand has forever been known as the purveyor of GT cars, cars specially designed for big touring over considerable distances capable of carrying a number of things. I’d say a minimum of two suitcases with enough space inside to hold stuff, bottom, purse and/or small dogs. Good luck doing it in a Audi r8.

The Aston Martin DBX is an extension of that concept, admittedly to an extreme degree. Your travel will be so epic that you will need more gear or have a larger dog or need to take the kids with you or need to go a long way on a rough road. I like to think of it as a family GT car.

So, how is it family-friendly? Well, the wide wheelbase provides a generous amount of space for the rear seats. I could easily fit the large rear-facing seat of my son’s Britax Boulevard and still have room for all of my 6-foot-3-year-olds to comfortably sit in the front passenger seat. prior to. I don’t even need to put it that to go further. It’s rare. I had to move up small truck Front seat.

But I’m here to talk about cargo capacity, officially listed at 22.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats. I can tell you right now that’s cheating – there’s more to it than that. Aston Martin, very similar Mercedes-BenzPorsche and maybe Land Rover, a different measurement must be used than most machines in the industry. The 22.3 cubic feet capacity would be in the mid-size SUV range, in the middle of a Mazda CX-30 and Kia Seltos. I can say for sure it has more space than those. In fact, it has more space than compact luxury SUVs like Genesis GV70, listed at 28.9. I wouldn’t be surprised if it would be in the low 30s if Aston Martin used a different measurement.

You won’t find cargo areas with a nicer rug than this. Having a rubber floor mat to keep in the garage would be a good idea.

Now, like most SUVs, DBX Includes a cargo cap. It’s definitely not normal, though. It’s a piece of hardware, common in hatchbacks and crossover-coupes whose low roofline doesn’t really leave much usable space between the cargo line and the hood. That is not entirely the case here. Instead, I’m pretty sure this powerful device is used for sound reduction and classicism purposes. It is lined with lovely leather.

As I usually do with SUVs that come with cargo covers that can’t be stowed inside the vehicle, I’m going to run the tests with and without the leather paneling.

As with every baggage check, I use two medium roller suitcases that need to be checked in at the airport (26 inches long, 16 wide, 11 deep), two on-board roll-on suitcases that only fit the top (24L x 15W x 10D) and one roll on smaller ships that fit easily (23L x 15W x 10D). I also included my wife’s favorite overnight bag just to spruce things up a bit (21L x 12W x 12D).

DBX clearly deviated in direction intersection “coupe”, but not the same as Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Infiniti QX55, the rear part of the cargo area is taller and less cut off by the lift door. Therefore, besides providing more usable space, I also use less profanity and swearing. Turns out the pretty Vantage-like ducktail finally serves a practical purpose.

The level of cargo coverage is also quite high, especially compared to the relatively low level Cayenne’s. As such, more can fit inside. The picture above would just be a fancy bag, but there’s obviously still a decent amount of space left for something other than that particular bag. Note that the bag closest to the camera cannot be placed on the left side as it will prevent the elevator door from closing.

OK, let’s remove the leather board.

The top left will be all the pockets, stacked at just above the back of the seat. Apparently there’s also quite a bit of space left. I stuffed it in a duffle bag, top right, to fill the void, but you can certainly fill it further with odds and ends.

So this can more than match Porsche Cayenne Coupe, which I consider to be DBX’s closest competitor in terms of overall concept and execution. It’s also much easier to fit inside. On paper, the Cayenne has a similar capacity of 17.6 cubic feet. Maybe it’s the same measurement method as Aston Martin and Mercedes use? Who knows, this confusion and inconsistency is actually the main reason why I do these tests.

DBX also performs better Mercedes GLC, Genesis GV70 and Audi Q5, so it’s clearly in the midsize cargo capacity range. I’d say it’s best comparable to Lexus RX.

Now, some other merchandise-related items…

Like other SUVs with height-adjustable air suspension, the DBX has buttons in the cargo area that allow you to raise and lower the rear for loading or sitting purposes. You can see the lowest and highest height available.

You can also fold the rear seats remotely from the cargo area, but there are no simple plastic scissors here. This is not a Subaru Forester. There is an electronic button for each side.

Referring to the lift door control buttons must be familiar to anyone who owns a Mercedes. The DBX uses plenty of other switches from the Mercedes parts bin, sure to beat Aston Martins with door handles from Miatas, steering wheels from Crown Victorias and control the radio from Volvo S40s.

Also, note that even the bottom of the lift doors is carpeted.

Finally, fitting a 22-inch full-size wheel and tire in the back definitely looks like it’s going to be stretched, so the inflatable space saver here is as solid as hell pounding a can of goo, AAA memberships and necklaces that so many luxury SUVs require.

It is done. Aston Martin’s SUV is actually much more usable than I expected. It’s legitimately useful, and when you consider how beautiful it is, how great it is to drive, and how well-made the cabin is, you’re looking at one of the most complete vehicles on the road. More on that in an upcoming road test.
