Canon launches the Cinema EOS C400 full-frame RF mount camera

Canon does announced RF-mounted full-frame 6K Cinema EOS camera—EOS C400. Unlike the other two RF-mount camcorders in Canon’s lineup—more like a DSLR EOS R5C and EOS C70—The new C400 has a more cube-like design like that of EOS C300 Mark III, compatible with EF and PL lenses. Besides the C400, Canon also introduced the new PL-RF Mount Adapter, allowing users to work with PL mount lenses.

According to Canon, the C400’s full-frame 6K CMOS back-illuminated stacked image sensor is a completely new design that offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range. The sensor supports the company’s Dual Pixel AF II and boasts a three-base ISO (800, 3,200, and 12,800), which promises improved noise performance and dynamic range, especially in low light. The C400 can record full-frame 6K/60p footage in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light format. It can also record 4K/120p and 2K/180p RAW video. The camera has a CFexpress Type B card slot and a secondary SD (UHS-II) slot, and it can simultaneously record RAW footage to a CFexpress card and proxy footage to an SD card.

Launching in September, the Canon Cinema EOS C400 will be priced at $8,000, while the PL-RF Mount Adapter will retail for $1,600.

Canon announces new 6K EOS C400 full-frame RF-mounted cinema camera and RF-mounted CINE-SERVO lens

The new EOS C400 features a 6K full-frame, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, with three-base ISO; New CINE-SERVO lenses are compatible with RF-mounted camcorders

MELVILLE, NY, June 5, 2024 —Canon USA Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is pleased to announce the new Canon EOS C400 film camera, with stacked CMOS sensor full-frame and full-frame, backlit with native RF mount , designed for the film and live production markets. Canon is also proud to announce the company’s first PL-RF MOUNT ADAPTER and the RF mount version of the popular and award-winning CINE-SERVO 17-120mm cinema lens.

Brian Mahar, senior vice president and general manager of Canon USA, Inc. “Canon is proud to provide filmmakers and cinematographers with a variety of tools to capture high-quality and visually impressive images,” said. impressive cinema product line.”

Back-illuminated stacked sensor of the EOS C400 camera

For the first time in the cinema EOS system, the Canon EOS C400 camera features a newly developed 6K full-frame, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, with three-base ISO, allowing the camera to deliver stunning images in many lighting conditions. Base ISOs of 800, 3200, and 12,800 maximize the camera’s full dynamic range.

An additional benefit of the EOS C400’s sensor is support for Canon’s next generation Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, Dual Pixel AF II. The back-illuminated stacked position provides better light collection efficiency, which expands the sensor area that can be used for autofocus. The sensor also delivers faster readout speeds as well as better 4K image quality from 6K oversampling.

Recording options of the EOS C400 camera

The EOS C400 records at full frame 6K resolution up to 60p in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light mode. By changing the sensor mode, the camera can record 4K RAW up to 120 fps and 2K RAW up to 180 fps. All of this is captured in Canon’s latest version of Cinema RAW Light, which offers three different recording modes to choose from depending on your file size and workflow preferences.

Other recording options include the industry-standard XF-AVC codec developed by Canon, which can record in 10-bit 4:2:2 format with oversampling from the 6K sensor, helping to produce high resolution. Rich and smooth details.

images, at frame rates up to 120P without cropping the image from the sensor. Canon also introduced two new recording codecs into the EOS C400, XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S. These formats have an easy-to-manage naming system and folder structure, and record in MP4 format familiar and preserves metadata.

All of these options are recorded to the camera’s CFexpress slot with secondary and proxy recording options available to the SD Card slot, allowing simultaneous recording even when shooting RAW.

EOS C400 camera production options

For live productions, the EOS C400 camera body features a dedicated 12-pin lens terminal for broadcast and cine-servo lenses, multiple output and input interfaces including a mini-XLR audio input, DIN connector for timecode, genlock and video playback, 12G-SDI and 3G-SDI Monitor Outputs, full-size HDMI output, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, Ethernet and more. This camera also has SRT protocol for IP video and audio streaming. For shooting situations where the camera will be controlled remotely, you can use the Ethernet port or Wi-Fi connection to enable remote control, which includes support for the Canon Multi-Camera Control app, which browser remote control or Canon RC-IP100 or RC- IP1000 controller through use of the included XC protocol.

The EOS C400 can also provide frame-by-frame metadata in real-time and post-production to support virtual production workflows. Ready for 180-degree VR shooting, the EOS C400 has built-in compatibility with the Canon RF5.2mm F2.8 L dual fisheye lens.

CINE-SERVO 17-120mm cinema lens

This latest cinema lens from Canon builds on the heritage of the company’s CINE-SERVO line, with the added benefit of a native RF mount. Additional RF mount pins enhance communication with RF mount cameras such as the EOS C400, allowing autofocus, distortion correction, and metadata export for virtual production. Lens available in RF or PL mount configurations, with the PL mount version supporting ZEISS Extended Data and ARIA (Automatic Light Attenuation Recovery)I.

The lens’s new e-Xs V servo actuator improves focus and iris speeds, enables focus breathing compensation, and includes a USB-C connector for replicating actuator configurations.

PL to RF mounting converter

Canon also introduced the newly developed MOUNT ADAPTER PL-RF. This adapter opens up a wide range of PL mount lenses for the EOS C400 camera. The adapter maintains compatibility for Cooke i/Technology metadata communication between the camera and lens, and includes locking plates to help achieve maximum mounting strength.
