Canada: Environment Canada issues weather ‘red alert’ for British Columbia
Armel Castellan, a meteorologist for Environment and Climate Change Canada, told CNN’s Canada affiliate CTV: “Red levels are something new that we haven’t issued yet.
“We’re currently in recovery mode and there’s still dangerous weather ahead. We had another atmospheric river yesterday,” Castellan said. “What is forecast for this weekend will be hurricane number two and again next week, Tuesday and Wednesday, will be hurricane number three in a row.”
Castellan notes that the storms are returning in quick succession with little time between storms.
“So imagine we’ve had an unusually wet fall, the land, the landscape is completely saturated. Any additional moisture will drop more easily and quickly,” he said. much”.
“We also have snow,” he said. “So at those mid-altitudes, there’s melting snow, and that’s exactly what the next storms are going to do. We’re going to add melt snow to the rainwater and create a lot of runoff.”
Castellan warns the new weather system will send warm air into regions of extreme altitude, with mountain heating that could reach 3,000 meters, if not higher.
British Columbia’s Department of Transport and Infrastructure is proactively closing some sections of highways and asking drivers to avoid non-essential travel ahead of another heavy rain forecast.
“Highway infrastructure in these areas is extremely vulnerable following recent storms and heavier rains in the forecast will pose additional risks,” the ministry said in a statement.
